From the Desk of “Plants and Flowers, from A to Z”

Hello good afternoon to everyone. Today I enter the workshop to write and participate in a nice initiative of the blog GuíadeJadín, called Plants and Flowers; of AZ. It is about writing about the plants or flowers that we like the most, but with the condition that his name starts with the letter, he plays each month. This month, as this initiative has just begun, we begin with the letter A. The plant by A that I like the most is the ADELFA. I show you a photo.

It is likely that many of you think “the oleander with the pretty flowers that start with the letter A” … but you will see the reason for choosing it is double, on the one hand, although I have a garden and I really like the flowers, my botanical culture is not very broad, and I do not know many plant names. And on the other hand, this plant we like a lot to Juan and me because we think it is a bit undervalued, especially since it began to plant in the medians and the margins of the roads. I think that this has made us accustomed to seeing her grow in a “wild” and sometimes dirty way due to pollution or car smoke, and we do not appreciate her in all her beauty, which is really a lot.

Well, I’ll talk about her …

Oleander is also known as baladre, flower laurel or trinitaria. It grows in the form of a tree or shrubs up to six meters high. The leaves of the oleander are linear-lanceolate or narrowly elliptical, opposite and verticillated in a number of 3 or 4, with the nerves marked. The flower is usually pink, red, fuchsia, and rarely, white, salmon and pale yellow. There is also a species of variegated green-yellow leaves and a dwarf subspecies.

It is a very poisonous plant and totally inadvisable for private use because in small doses it can have a strong effect on the heart, so in Spain, its sale to the public is prohibited due to its toxicity, and its use and commercialization is restricted to the preparation of pharmaceutical specialties, as I read.

Thanks to its beautiful flower, it is a very cultivated species in the gardens and, as I said before, in the roads dividing. It is a plant very resistant to drought. If it is grown outdoors on the ground, it tends to have a lot of rain-water. If we grow it in a pot, the best way to water it is by placing a container of water under it and letting it absorb the amount it needs.

And with all this information, I hope I have contributed to the oleander being a little more admired, recognized and valued in all its beauty. What is certain is that we should thank him for cheering us up with monotonous and sometimes boring car trips.
